What advice would you give a new therapist?

If you're talking about a newly licensed therapist I would say their first job should be at a clinic that would take care of all their credentialing. If they plan to go into private practice right away the credentialing/contracting can be problematic.
Credential, credential, credential, and get your NPI!
Totally agree!! In getting your NPI be sure to keep track of your user name and password for updating info in the future!!!
