We are wondering if anyone has billed for multi-family group sessions without client present. If so under what CPT code?

We found CPT code 90849- Multiple-family group psychotherapy, however the description states when the patient is present with his or her family, as well as other patients and families for 50 minutes.  Any information provided is appreciated.

We billed something similar but it wasn't psychotherapy. Codes H2027 are family psycho-education codes.

Kelli,

We have just been considering using 90849 for the first time, but would be billing it with the client present. There's a max of five families and a minimum of two.

I'd be interested to hear others' experiences.

Thanks!
Kim

We use the H2027, it is billed in 15 min increments.  MA and PMAP pay no problem, but sometimes we have a hard time with commercial carriers.  BCBS and Medica come to mind.

Unfortunately, H2027 can only be used for clients under 21. Our use of 90849 would be for family groups where the client is an adult.
